SUMMARY:ESO 18/19: Beethoven's First Piano Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven’s career-making concerto is matched by Vaughan Williams’ unconventional\, yet beautiful elegy to the dead of The Great War. Hatzis’ evocative work was inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: We Will Remember
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War\, the SSO is exploring the music of solider composers and two great works written in response to the war. \nEach movement of Ravel’s timless Le tombeau de Couperin is dedicated to a friend he lost in war\, many of whom were friends and collaborators before the war began. Canadian John Burge captures the enduring poetry of Dr. John McCrae’s In Flanders Field in a moving piece for string orchestra. \nRenowned cellist Stéphane Tétreault makes his first Saskatchewan performance with Elgar’s passionate Cello Concerto. The piece has become somewhat of a calling card for the young Quebec cellist who’s won acclaim for his performances of it around the globe.

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Merry Christmas\, Stephen Leacock
DESCRIPTION:Chamber opera by Neil Wiesensel \nA co-production with Saskatoon Opera \nKnown for his gentle satire on small town life\, Stephen Leacock wrote the short story “Merry Christmas” as his own cry against the horrors of World War I and the inescapable robbing of innocence that war brings. Leacock is visited by two spirits over the course of one night. These otherworldly visitations will lead to a transformation including one that empowers the author to use his writing as a tool for peace. \nThis collaboration marks the first official co-production of the SSO and Saskatoon Opera.
