SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Finding Heinz Moehn
DESCRIPTION:Heinz Moehn was a noted editor for the German publisher Barenreiter. He was best known for his editions of Mozart’s works including the great Requiem. And\, while every major orchestra in the world has played his edition of the Requiem\, none knew he was also a remarkable composer—until now. \nHere in Saskatoon\, Heinz Moehn’s grandson unearthed his grandfather’s compositions in a box of family heirlooms. The SSO collaborated with Saskatoon-based composer Paul Suchan to take Moehn’s hand-written score for his Violin Concerto and create parts for the SSO to perform—marking the first performance of the concerto in 80 years. We’ve called up rising-star Timothy Chooi to lend his artistry to this unveiling of a new\, old concerto. \nWe’re pairing this debut of Moehn’s concerto with his edition of the beloved Mozart Requiem\, featuring a thrilling cast of singers including Prince Albert-born soprano Andrea Lett and tenor Michael Harris.

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: We Will Remember
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War\, the SSO is exploring the music of solider composers and two great works written in response to the war. \nEach movement of Ravel’s timless Le tombeau de Couperin is dedicated to a friend he lost in war\, many of whom were friends and collaborators before the war began. Canadian John Burge captures the enduring poetry of Dr. John McCrae’s In Flanders Field in a moving piece for string orchestra. \nRenowned cellist Stéphane Tétreault makes his first Saskatchewan performance with Elgar’s passionate Cello Concerto. The piece has become somewhat of a calling card for the young Quebec cellist who’s won acclaim for his performances of it around the globe.

SUMMARY:CPO 18/19: Worlds Collide
DESCRIPTION:Proclaimed the “Father of Symphonies\,” Joseph Haydn changed the course of history with his mastery of orchestral writing — power\, drama\, and élan which we hear in this\, his final symphony. It pairs evocatively with JUNO nominated composers Larysa Kuzmenko’s Behold the Night and Vincent Ho’s highly anticipated The Sandman’s Domain: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra — two enchanting works that journey into the realm of magic!

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Rachmaninoff Romance
DESCRIPTION:SSO opens its 2018/2019 season with two of the greatest pieces of music ever written! At the tender age of 19\, Tony Yike Yang has already garnered himself an international reputation for being one of the next great piano virtuosos. A Laureate of the International Chopin Competition\, Yang brings his technical prowess and innate sense of romanticism to Rachmaninoff’s incredible second Piano Concerto. His sunniest symphony of all\, Brahms’ lovable 2nd Symphony is a true masterpiece and the continuation of our Brahms Cycle. \nCanadian Dinuk Wijeratne’s musical explosion Yatre opens the season with an explosion of orchestral colour!

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Forecasting the Canadian Wind
DESCRIPTION:Our Canada: Forecasting the Canadian Wind spans the nation and beyond in the creation and presentation of new works by five Canadian composers in collaboration with five Canadian wind quintets who are partnered with five international wind quintets\, thereby initiating a worldwide network of wind chamber musicians to push the boundaries of the repertoire for this ensemble of flute\, oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon\, and French horn. \nFive Canadian wind quintets are each paired with a composer—Fifth Wind (Halifax\, NS) with Emily Doolittle (Nova Scotia/Scotland); Choros (Montreal\, QC) with Carmen Braden (Northwest Territories); Blythwood Winds (Toronto\, ON) with Daniel Janke (Yukon Territory); Mistral 5 (Saskatoon\, SK) with Cris Derksen (Northern Alberta/Ontario); and Ventos (Vancouver\, BC) with Cameron Wilson (Vancouver\, BC)—in this innovative pan-Canadian project. \nThe compositions are being developed over the course of seven months\, November 2017 to May 2018. The development process includes simultaneous week-long workshops\, each quintet with their composer. The quintets will document the workshops in order to share them with one another\, allowing all five quintets access to the five composers\, saving both time and costs in a true cross-Canada collaboration. The five quintets then have five months to rehearse all five new compositions.
