SUMMARY:Sonic Discoveries: New Music Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhilarating journey into the world of contemporary music at the Sonic Discoveries New Music Marathon! This event showcases two dynamic duos pushing the boundaries of sound and expression. The Prairie Saxophone Initiative\, featuring saxophonists Chinley Hinacay and Matthew Robinson\, will present an array of fresh and innovative works\, while percussionist Chris Sies and guitarist Darren Young will create captivating textures and rhythms in their own set. This will be a marathon of new music that celebrates the artistry and boldness of today’s musical pioneers. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an evening with the modern music scene! \nFounded in 2022 by Canadian Saxophonists Chinley Hinacay (MMUS) and Matthew Robinson (MMUS)\, the Prairie Saxophone Initiative (PSI) was created for the purpose of building awareness\, expanding repertoire\, and creating opportunities for developing saxophonists in the Prairies. PSI has undertaken several initiatives to serve these goals including the commissioning of under-represented Canadian composers\, hosting free workshops for student and adult amateur saxophonist\, and promoting accessible concert programming.  \nAlmost Noise is the newly minted partnership between percussionist Chris Sies and guitarist Darren Young. Equally at home in rock bands\, orchestras\, and composers in their own rights\, this program celebrates the duo’s love of their instruments through the borrowing of popular music idioms that\, in the past\, have been deemed so-called “simple” or “low art”. Helping shed this cultural baggage in chamber music circles\, Almost Noise presents Simple Songs with works by composers whose sonic dispositions are openly influenced by the popular music of their times (read: jazz\, rock\, pop). Inherently eclectic\, Simple Songs will take audiences through a series of soundscapes teetering between post-rock and ambient textures in works like Christopher Cerrone’s “Double Happiness” and Molly Joyce’s “One and Only”\, while singer-songwriters Tanner Porter and Andrea Hoyos bring a gentle chamber-pop influence to the set with works “Salt Heals\, Salt Takes Away” and “What you consider truth depends on how you look at it”. Drawing from post-minimalist aesthetics\, Samuel Adams beautifully marries polyrhythmic precision with harmonic warmth and ambient electronics in his “Hades and Persephone” from his multimedia work LYRA\, composed for the renowned guitar and percussion duo\, The Living Earth Show. \n\nPART ONE: PRAIRIE SAXOPHONE INITIATIVE \nFlower Duet from Lakme\, Leo Delibes \n3 Ms of a Union\, Lai Cheukman Joseph \n1) MESH: The Flirt\, Chase and Game \n2) MUSH: The Union of Lips and Hips \n3) MUCK: He Said\, She Said \nThe Sky Between Us\, Jenni Brandon \nLachrymae\, Tigran Mansurian \nSolitude of Stars\, Stacy Garrop \nLovers on the Celestial Sphere\, Jun Nagao \n\nPART TWO: ALMOST NOISE \nSalt Heals\, Salt Takes Away\, Tanner Porter \nDouble Happiness\, Christopher Cerrone \nSelf Portrait\, Part I\nInterlude I\nSelf Portrait\, Part II\nInterlude II\nNew Year’s Song \nHades and Persephone from LYRA\, Samuel Adams \nOne and Only\, Molly Joyce \nWhat you consider truth depends on how you look at it\, Andrea Hoyos \nSelections from Red\, Marc Mellits\, arr. SUMMARY:Dvořák & Stafylakis
DESCRIPTION:Hanna Havrylets: Chorale for strings\nHaralabos [Harry] Stafylakis: Violin Concerto — World Premiere\nAntonin Dvořák: Symphonic Variations \nExperience the world premiere of Harry Stafylakis’s genre-defying Violin Concerto\, alongside Antonín Dvorák’s rarely performed symphonic gem! \nExperience a world of musical contrasts with Dvorák & Stafylakis\, a concert that bridges the past and present with powerful compositions. The evening begins with Hanna Havrylets’s Chorale for Strings\, a poignant tribute to the late Ukrainian composer. Havrylets\, who passed away shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022\, composed this piece to transmit both lament and hope through its beautiful melodies and rich harmonies. \nNext\, prepare for the world premiere of Harry Stafylakis’s Violin Concerto\, performed by the electrifying and renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine. Known for her love of heavy metal and classical music\, Pine brings a unique intensity to this groundbreaking piece. Stafylakis\, the WSO’s Composer in Residence\, draws from his background in progressive metal to create a concerto that defies classical music conventions and resonates with contemporary audiences. \nThe concert concludes with Dvorák’s Symphonic Variations\, a masterpiece of melodic invention and orchestral color. This piece showcases Dvorák’s ability to transform a simple theme into a series of intricate and beautiful variations while demonstrating the versatility and skill of the WSO. \nFun Fact: Rachel Barton Pine is not only a classical virtuoso but also a passionate metalhead\, often blending her performances with the intensity of heavy metal music. \n  \nMusicians in the Making\nPre-Concert Performance\nSelections will be announced during the performance. \nWestgate Mennonite Collegiate Senior String Orchestra

SUMMARY:DEXTER LIVES! The Dexter Gordon 50th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nNebula Repertory Ensemble Association presents: DEXTER LIVES! The Dexter Gordon 50th Anniversary Concert\, Saturday\, February 22\, 2025\, 2:00 p.m. at Scarboro United Church\, 134 Scarboro Av. SW. \nThis is the Nebula society’s tribute to GRAMMY-winning and OSCAR-nominated NEA JAZZ MASTER tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon (February 27\, 1923 to April 25\, 1990) on the 50th anniversary of his only Calgary appearance (November 25\, 1974\, University Theatre\, John C. Reid concert presenter) and the 102nd anniversary of his birth. The concert features JUNO-nominated Al Muirhead\, trumpet; John Reid\, saxophone and flute; Jon Day\, piano; John Gray\, bass; Ed Batley\, drums. \nMr. Gordon performed only once in our fair city: in November 1974 — 50 years ago. The producer of that event was our current Artistic Director and saxophonist\, John Reid\, and the bass player that performed in that concert\, John V. Gray\, is also performing. Mr. Reid did his Master’s thesis on Dexter Gordon (M.A. Jazz History and Research from Rutgers\, the State University of New Jersey\, 2010\, Lewis Porter\, supervisor) \nThe Nebula Repertory Ensemble Association (incorporated as a non-profit society in the Province of Alberta in 2019) has received a project grant from CADA (Calgary Arts Development Authority) to present this concert. \n  \nTickets: $40; $35 for Nebula & CALL members; $10 for students. Available at eventbrite.ca. \n  \nDexter Gordon\, saxophone \n(February 27\, 1923 to April 25\, 1990) National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Dexter Gordon is widely known in jazz as being the musician to translate alto saxophonist Charlie Parker’s and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie’s Bebop musical innovations to the tenor saxophone in the late 1950s. In 1986\, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as fictional character (saxophonist) Dale Turner in Bernard Tavernier’s film ‘Round Midnight. Mr. Gordon is the only jazz musician ever to be nominated for that award. The musical score for the film won the Oscar for pianist Herbie Hancock. \nA gig in 1962 at Ronnie Scott’s Club in London was a new experience for Dexter and he began to travel and work in Europe. Eventually\, he settled in Copenhagen where he lived until his return to the U.S. in 1976. During that period in Europe\, he travelled extensively\, and worked for long periods at the historic Jazzhus Montmartre. He recorded prolifically for the Blue Note\, Prestige\, and Steeplechase record labels\, among others. \nIn 1976\, Dexter enjoyed a hero’s welcome in the U.S. when he made his return engagement at Storyville in New York City with Woody Shaw\, Louis Hayes\, Ronnie Mathews\, and Stafford James. He subsequently played the Village Vanguard\, signed with Columbia Records\, and was officially “back in town.” Mr. Gordon’s “Homecoming” sparked a reignition of interest in the Bebop stream of Jazz during this period of the 1970s when fusion and disco reigned supreme. He organized his first working band during this period with George Cables\, Rufus Reid\, and Eddie Gladden. He considered this band to be his best\, toured extensively with them\, and recorded Live \nat the Keystone (Mosaic) and Manhattan Symphonie (CBS Sony) with the group. He won the Grammy Award for his album The Other Side of ‘Round Midnight. \n  \nUpcoming concerts: \n· Tribute to the Music of Herbie Hancock (May 24)\, \n· Tribute to the Music of Richard Rodgers (April 12)\, \n· Virtuosic Brazilian Classics (July 19). \nContact: John Reid (403) 605-5876\, jcreid@ucalgary.ca

SUMMARY:GS3: Knee-deep in Clouds\, A tribute to Diana McIntosh
DESCRIPTION:GS3: Knee-deep in Clouds\, A tribute to Diana McIntosh\nFebruary 11\, 2025 7:30PM\, Westworth United Church\nGuest Curated by Luciane Cardassi\nFrom Luciane: \n“This concert honors iconic artist Diana McIntosh’s life as a performer\, composer\, educator\, and community builder. Diana spent time in Banff throughout her life\, with deep appreciation for the Rocky Mountains. As a Banff-based pianist\, I met Diana on several occasions\, and had the opportunity to study her original scores at the University of Manitoba Archives. This\, and my intention to connect with Winnipeg artists Ben Reimer and Laurel Ridd who had worked closely with Diana\, led to this program of pieces for percussion\, flute and solo piano including Diana’s delightful Aiby-Aicy-Aidyai for toy piano and vocal sounds.”

SUMMARY:Field Studies / Vines : The Music of Emilie LeBel played by ultraviolet\, Jane Berry\, And Laura Reid
DESCRIPTION:For the second concert in our 2024-2025 season lineup\, we bring together Edmonton-based composer Emilie LeBel alongside Calgary-based choreographer Melanie Kloetzel\, for an evening of live music and dance playing and moving in parallel.\nfield studies is the 2023 full-length album debut of acclaimed Canadian composer Emilie Cecilia LeBel.  Described by Riparian Media as ‘a quietly gripping affair that illustrates the interplay between pensive—almost austere—lyricism and percolating texture’\, the full collection of works will be performed live by Edmonton’s Ultraviolet chamber ensemble\, with special guest appearances from Edmonton mezzo-soprano Jane Berry and Calgary violinist Laura Reid.  Emilie LeBel herself will be operating live electronics during the performance. \nVINES is a durational site-adaptive installation created by Melanie Kloetzel (kloetzel&co.) with dramaturgical support from Brandy Leary (Anandam Dancetheatre). Grounded in the concept of ‘making kin’ with our plant brethren\, VINES explores how the human body can translate the growth patterns of climbing plants into a visual feast of respect\, reciprocity and wonder. As the mass quantity of performers takes over the performance environment\, VINES offers a surreal and mesmerizing vision of vegetal reclamation. In conversation with the haunting music of Emilie LeBel\, VINES engages audiences in a larger conversation about humanity’s future in relation to other species on the planet. \nThe two works\, field studies and VINES will occur simultaneously in a sonically glittering and choreographically speculative exchange.

SUMMARY:Decolonizing the Narrative: Adrian Stimson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful conversation with Adrian Stimson as part of the Decolonizing the Narrative Conversation Series. In this session titled Not for the Faint of Heart: The Continuum of Decolonizing the Western Art Practice\, Stimson will explore his artistic journey and the constant challenge of decolonizing his work in an often politically hostile world.\n\nStimson often tells people that art is not for the faint of heart\, as it takes courage to face the colonial beast—an incessant and relentless process. He reflects on how\, as Indigenous artists\, we navigate the hostilities of a politically charged world\, care for ourselves\, and use our art to counter dominant narratives. He challenges us to consider: Are we truly decolonizing\, or are we merely pawns in an ever-shifting game controlled by colonial powers? Akin to The Matrix\, do we choose the white pill\, the red pill—or simply become a pill ourselves? \nFacilitated by Janine Windolph\, Director of Indigenous Arts at Banff Centre\, the session includes a presentation by Stimson followed by a discussion and a Q&A. This conversation will be recorded and shared following the event\, but the Q&A portion will remain unrecorded. Sessions may share experiences and ask difficult questions.

SUMMARY:Dinuk Wijeratne by Cheng² Duo with Cecilian Chamber Series – November 3
DESCRIPTION:With their programme “Between Friends and Family\,” Cheng² Duo explores the relationships between generations of composers across cultures and centuries\, celebrating the friendships and admiration they inspired. The first half juxtaposes two revolutionaries of their time: Dinuk Wijeratne and Ludwig van Beethoven. Wijeratne\, who fuses elements of Indian and Middle Eastern music in his compositions\, was inspired by Beethoven’s 3rd cello sonata to write his JUNO-nominated work\, Portrait of an Imaginary Sibling; meanwhile\, Beethoven blazed the trail for future composers\, being the first to write sonatas for cello and piano that treated both instruments as equals. The brother-and-sister duo then takes us to Paris in the 1910s – the ultimate melting pot of culture in the world – where musicians\, painters\, poets\, writers\, and choreographers gathered regularly to exchange ideas. Claude Debussy was a central figure in that musical scene\, which included his close friends Manuel de Falla and Igor Stravinsky. Revel in the unique musical soundworlds each composer has to offer with their distinct and powerful voices and witness the influence that endearment and adoration create in these classical masterworks!
