SUMMARY:Field Studies / Vines : The Music of Emilie LeBel played by ultraviolet\, Jane Berry\, And Laura Reid
DESCRIPTION:For the second concert in our 2024-2025 season lineup\, we bring together Edmonton-based composer Emilie LeBel alongside Calgary-based choreographer Melanie Kloetzel\, for an evening of live music and dance playing and moving in parallel.\nfield studies is the 2023 full-length album debut of acclaimed Canadian composer Emilie Cecilia LeBel.  Described by Riparian Media as ‘a quietly gripping affair that illustrates the interplay between pensive—almost austere—lyricism and percolating texture’\, the full collection of works will be performed live by Edmonton’s Ultraviolet chamber ensemble\, with special guest appearances from Edmonton mezzo-soprano Jane Berry and Calgary violinist Laura Reid.  Emilie LeBel herself will be operating live electronics during the performance. \nVINES is a durational site-adaptive installation created by Melanie Kloetzel (kloetzel&co.) with dramaturgical support from Brandy Leary (Anandam Dancetheatre). Grounded in the concept of ‘making kin’ with our plant brethren\, VINES explores how the human body can translate the growth patterns of climbing plants into a visual feast of respect\, reciprocity and wonder. As the mass quantity of performers takes over the performance environment\, VINES offers a surreal and mesmerizing vision of vegetal reclamation. In conversation with the haunting music of Emilie LeBel\, VINES engages audiences in a larger conversation about humanity’s future in relation to other species on the planet. \nThe two works\, field studies and VINES will occur simultaneously in a sonically glittering and choreographically speculative exchange.

SUMMARY:Decolonizing the Narrative: Adrian Stimson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful conversation with Adrian Stimson as part of the Decolonizing the Narrative Conversation Series. In this session titled Not for the Faint of Heart: The Continuum of Decolonizing the Western Art Practice\, Stimson will explore his artistic journey and the constant challenge of decolonizing his work in an often politically hostile world.\n\nStimson often tells people that art is not for the faint of heart\, as it takes courage to face the colonial beast—an incessant and relentless process. He reflects on how\, as Indigenous artists\, we navigate the hostilities of a politically charged world\, care for ourselves\, and use our art to counter dominant narratives. He challenges us to consider: Are we truly decolonizing\, or are we merely pawns in an ever-shifting game controlled by colonial powers? Akin to The Matrix\, do we choose the white pill\, the red pill—or simply become a pill ourselves? \nFacilitated by Janine Windolph\, Director of Indigenous Arts at Banff Centre\, the session includes a presentation by Stimson followed by a discussion and a Q&A. This conversation will be recorded and shared following the event\, but the Q&A portion will remain unrecorded. Sessions may share experiences and ask difficult questions.

SUMMARY:Dinuk Wijeratne by Cheng² Duo with Cecilian Chamber Series – November 3
DESCRIPTION:With their programme “Between Friends and Family\,” Cheng² Duo explores the relationships between generations of composers across cultures and centuries\, celebrating the friendships and admiration they inspired. The first half juxtaposes two revolutionaries of their time: Dinuk Wijeratne and Ludwig van Beethoven. Wijeratne\, who fuses elements of Indian and Middle Eastern music in his compositions\, was inspired by Beethoven’s 3rd cello sonata to write his JUNO-nominated work\, Portrait of an Imaginary Sibling; meanwhile\, Beethoven blazed the trail for future composers\, being the first to write sonatas for cello and piano that treated both instruments as equals. The brother-and-sister duo then takes us to Paris in the 1910s – the ultimate melting pot of culture in the world – where musicians\, painters\, poets\, writers\, and choreographers gathered regularly to exchange ideas. Claude Debussy was a central figure in that musical scene\, which included his close friends Manuel de Falla and Igor Stravinsky. Revel in the unique musical soundworlds each composer has to offer with their distinct and powerful voices and witness the influence that endearment and adoration create in these classical masterworks!

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Eroica
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible that the thumping opening chords of Beethoven’s third symphony changed the history of music? \nConsidered one of the greatest and most popular orchestral works ever written\, Beethoven’s Eroica is a symphonic masterpiece and it’s steeped in myth. Did Beethoven really change its dedication? Did audiences really find its strange modulations and violent transitions unsettling? \nWe open the night with Beethoven’s Contradances for orchestra. You’ll hear the composer working through his early sketches of ideas for his third symphony. \nThe night features the SSO’s Principal Flute Sarah Yunji Moon in a thrilling concerto by audience favourite Christos Hatzis.  Departures requires a fearless flutist of the highest caliber–and its the perfect way for us to showcase her remarkable playing!

SUMMARY:SSO 18/19: Finding Heinz Moehn
DESCRIPTION:Heinz Moehn was a noted editor for the German publisher Barenreiter. He was best known for his editions of Mozart’s works including the great Requiem. And\, while every major orchestra in the world has played his edition of the Requiem\, none knew he was also a remarkable composer—until now. \nHere in Saskatoon\, Heinz Moehn’s grandson unearthed his grandfather’s compositions in a box of family heirlooms. The SSO collaborated with Saskatoon-based composer Paul Suchan to take Moehn’s hand-written score for his Violin Concerto and create parts for the SSO to perform—marking the first performance of the concerto in 80 years. We’ve called up rising-star Timothy Chooi to lend his artistry to this unveiling of a new\, old concerto. \nWe’re pairing this debut of Moehn’s concerto with his edition of the beloved Mozart Requiem\, featuring a thrilling cast of singers including Prince Albert-born soprano Andrea Lett and tenor Michael Harris.
