Both locations offer a special ambiance which captures the celtic stylings of Loreena McKenntt’s music as well as the beauty of the harp. \nThis is an event you do not want to miss! \nTracie is a mulifaceted\, versatile musician who brings her love of celtic music to life with her glorious voice and unique instrumentation. Recently\, Tracie learned the lap harp which her mother often accompanied her during many celtic performances. Tracie will also be playing the penny whistles\, keyboards and bodhrán to accompany her powerful voice. \nKate is such a special addition to Tracie’s music. DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based\, Tahltan and Tlingit Musician Edzi’U presents ‘The Moose Are Life’\, a visual sound installation that speaks to the disappearance of the moose in Tahltan Territory.\nThe low numbers of moose in Northern BC have been said to be from a direct result to over hunting in the area\, however\, the province of BC will not introduce limited entry hunting regulations. Moose counts aren’t showing much of decline\, but the fact remains: Tahltan aren’t seeing the same amount of moose. The piece speaks to our colonial inheritance of Indigenous peoples\, and the invasive  systems of capitalism\, colonialism\, and non-resident hunters in Tahltan Territory. \nThis weekend of immersion in to Edzi’u’s sound and performance world will feature a drop-in sound installation\, live performance activations of the installation\, and a guided walk.\n  \nSaturday \, April 19\n12PM – Welcome to Land & Territory with Deedra Ladouceur\, followed by a short music set by Edzi’u.\n1 PM – Opening of sound installation\, featuring ‘The Moose are Life’ Live performance by Edzi’u.\n2-4PM – Gallery Drop-In Hours.\n  \nSunday\, April 20\n12-1 PM – Gallery Drop-in Hours.\n1PM – Second Live performance of The Moose are Life.\n2PM: guided walk.\n \nEdzi’u is a Tahltan and Tlingit artist based in Vancouver\, Canada on the unceded territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. An innovative songwriter and composer who paints stories of the past\, present and future with textures\, elders stories\, words\, and their ethereal voice – their 2023 album “Potlatch In The Box ” is a stunning showcase of that artistic vision. Being rich in culture\, full of passion and spirit\, the power behind their use of sound goes deep within the listener\, inspiring them to be bold and genuine\, while living fully within their hearts. \nDrawing inspiration from their roots and their experiences Edzi’u weaves together a tapestry of sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. DESCRIPTION:Composers have been writing about nature’s light and the celestial landscape for centuries. The sun and the moon and the stars\, the aurora borealis and lightning have been the inspiration for many choral compositions. Whether we look at the sky during the day or more prominently during the hours of darkness\, there is always an impressive display of light\, unless\, of course\, it is cloudy. Taking their inspiration from this light\, poets have lauded the magnificence of this light that can create such beauty\, and composers have so often taken those words and used them as inspiration to better depict that light. This concert contains music that addresses all these possibilities for light. This event showcases two dynamic duos pushing the boundaries of sound and expression. The Prairie Saxophone Initiative\, featuring saxophonists Chinley Hinacay and Matthew Robinson\, will present an array of fresh and innovative works\, while percussionist Chris Sies and guitarist Darren Young will create captivating textures and rhythms in their own set. This will be a marathon of new music that celebrates the artistry and boldness of today’s musical pioneers. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an evening with the modern music scene! \nFounded in 2022 by Canadian Saxophonists Chinley Hinacay (MMUS) and Matthew Robinson (MMUS)\, the Prairie Saxophone Initiative (PSI) was created for the purpose of building awareness\, expanding repertoire\, and creating opportunities for developing saxophonists in the Prairies. PSI has undertaken several initiatives to serve these goals including the commissioning of under-represented Canadian composers\, hosting free workshops for student and adult amateur saxophonist\, and promoting accessible concert programming.  \nAlmost Noise is the newly minted partnership between percussionist Chris Sies and guitarist Darren Young. Equally at home in rock bands\, orchestras\, and composers in their own rights\, this program celebrates the duo’s love of their instruments through the borrowing of popular music idioms that\, in the past\, have been deemed so-called “simple” or “low art”. Helping shed this cultural baggage in chamber music circles\, Almost Noise presents Simple Songs with works by composers whose sonic dispositions are openly influenced by the popular music of their times (read: jazz\, rock\, pop). Inherently eclectic\, Simple Songs will take audiences through a series of soundscapes teetering between post-rock and ambient textures in works like Christopher Cerrone’s “Double Happiness” and Molly Joyce’s “One and Only”\, while singer-songwriters Tanner Porter and Andrea Hoyos bring a gentle chamber-pop influence to the set with works “Salt Heals\, Salt Takes Away” and “What you consider truth depends on how you look at it”. DESCRIPTION:Own the Stage: Mental Skills for Audition Excellence\nDate: February 26th\, 2025\nTime: 2pm to 3:30pm EST\nThis panel discussion will explore mental strategies and approaches specific to both university and professional auditions. Panelists will also discuss audition processes in music and acting\, as well as potential changes that result after the audition. Our panelists consist of expert practitioners and performers who will share various perspectives related to auditions: mental skills consultant\, jury evaluation\, and of course – the performer.\n​\nCamille Charbonneau is a mental performance consultant with extensive experience working with both student and professional musicians\, including students from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. Carolyn Christie is the former Second Flute Chair of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and is currently on faculty at the University of Ottawa. Soprano and actress Meher Pavri has performed in a number of productions including West Side Story (Maria) and the Canadian premiere of Mahabharata. Lisa Chisholm is a Juilliard-trained bassoonist who is a member of the Canadian Opera Company orchestra. Joanna Latala is a professional cellist and graduate of the University of Gothenburg’s orchestral performance program. \nAdmission is free\, but registration is required. The Dexter Gordon 50th Anniversary Concert\, Saturday\, February 22\, 2025\, 2:00 p.m. at Scarboro United Church\, 134 Scarboro Av. SW. \nThis is the Nebula society’s tribute to GRAMMY-winning and OSCAR-nominated NEA JAZZ MASTER tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon (February 27\, 1923 to April 25\, 1990) on the 50th anniversary of his only Calgary appearance (November 25\, 1974\, University Theatre\, John C. Reid concert presenter) and the 102nd anniversary of his birth. The concert features JUNO-nominated Al Muirhead\, trumpet; John Reid\, saxophone and flute; Jon Day\, piano; John Gray\, bass; Ed Batley\, drums. \nMr. Gordon performed only once in our fair city: in November 1974 — 50 years ago. The producer of that event was our current Artistic Director and saxophonist\, John Reid\, and the bass player that performed in that concert\, John V. Gray\, is also performing. Mr. Reid did his Master’s thesis on Dexter Gordon (M.A. Jazz History and Research from Rutgers\, the State University of New Jersey\, 2010\, Lewis Porter\, supervisor) \nThe Nebula Repertory Ensemble Association (incorporated as a non-profit society in the Province of Alberta in 2019) has received a project grant from CADA (Calgary Arts Development Authority) to present this concert. \n  \nTickets: $40; $35 for Nebula & CALL members; $10 for students. Available at eventbrite.ca. \n  \nDexter Gordon\, saxophone \n(February 27\, 1923 to April 25\, 1990) National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Dexter Gordon is widely known in jazz as being the musician to translate alto saxophonist Charlie Parker’s and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie’s Bebop musical innovations to the tenor saxophone in the late 1950s. In 1986\, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as fictional character (saxophonist) Dale Turner in Bernard Tavernier’s film ‘Round Midnight. Mr. Gordon is the only jazz musician ever to be nominated for that award. The musical score for the film won the Oscar for pianist Herbie Hancock. \nA gig in 1962 at Ronnie Scott’s Club in London was a new experience for Dexter and he began to travel and work in Europe. Eventually\, he settled in Copenhagen where he lived until his return to the U.S. in 1976. During that period in Europe\, he travelled extensively\, and worked for long periods at the historic Jazzhus Montmartre. He recorded prolifically for the Blue Note\, Prestige\, and Steeplechase record labels\, among others. \nIn 1976\, Dexter enjoyed a hero’s welcome in the U.S. when he made his return engagement at Storyville in New York City with Woody Shaw\, Louis Hayes\, Ronnie Mathews\, and Stafford James. He subsequently played the Village Vanguard\, signed with Columbia Records\, and was officially “back in town.” Mr. Gordon’s “Homecoming” sparked a reignition of interest in the Bebop stream of Jazz during this period of the 1970s when fusion and disco reigned supreme. He organized his first working band during this period with George Cables\, Rufus Reid\, and Eddie Gladden. He considered this band to be his best\, toured extensively with them\, and recorded Live \nat the Keystone (Mosaic) and Manhattan Symphonie (CBS Sony) with the group.
