SUMMARY:NME Autumn Equinox
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\, 7:30 PM \n\nMile Zero Dance: 9931- 78 Avenue NW\, Edmonton\nAccess Intimacy (Brooke Leifso and Gary James Joynes); pseudo-antigone (Simone Atenea Medina Polo); Golden Sun Trio (Mustafa Rafiq; Nadir Bellhamer; Ethan Bokma); Gary James Joynes (aka Clinker); Nanyen Lau/ Jia Jia Yong \nNew Music Edmonton is celebrating its 40th anniversary season! \n\nAccess Intimacy\nBrooke Leifso and Gary James Joynes\nAccess Intimacy\, the score by Berlin-based composer Michael Winter and local Brooke Leifso is deceptively simple\, amplifying the difference of breath and body through sonic practices. The piece premiered in December 2024 and received support from Art Quarter Budapest (part of the Eastern European Network). The Edmonton premiere will be performed by Brooke Leifso and Gary James Joynes. Gary\, known for droning electronic-based sound art was invited to perform alongside Brooke. This work exists in an intersection of their art practices: meditative\, contemplative. Access Intimacy is also a term coined by disability activist Mia Mingus\, that speaks to the magical interdependent support\, more here. \npseudo-antigone\nSimone A. Medina Polo\npseudo-antigone shares excerpts from her recent album Melancholic Melodrama showcase the storytelling of the album and the experimental pop sound design around it. The album tells a quasi-fiction about the undoing of an insecure artist who severed her own humanity in a Faustian bargain to become TMZ-level pop star disaster. Sonically\, the album is influenced by the work of artists like FKA twigs\, Charli xcx\, A.G. Cook\, and SOPHIE with overproduced and exaggerated pop music with punchy beats\, industrial production\, and ironic yet heartfelt lyricism. \nGolden Sun Trio\nNadir Bellahmer\, Ethan Bokma & Mustafa Rafiq\nThis performance coincides with the release of “Lifecycles Ritual Myth”\, the group’s second full-length record and first with Edmonton label\, Honey Farm Records. An unofficial release party. Vinyl will be available for purchase through the band. \nClinker\nGary James Joynes\nPanta Rhei unfolds like an evolving river of sound. Inspired by Heraclitus’s philosophy that “everything flows\,” the performance builds an ever-shifting sonic landscape that resists structure\, embracing transformation. As modules connect and disconnect in real-time\, the audience is immersed in a living sound sculpture—fluid and impermanent. In Panta Rhei\, the only constant is change. \nNanyen Lau and Jia Jia Yong\nNanyen Lau\, erhu and Jia Jia Yong\, konghou\nNanyen Lau and Jia Jia Yong celebrate Chinese traditional music. Nanyen brings out the rich and soulful tone of the erhu\, a traditional two-stringed bowed instrument\, through repertoire that highlights regional genres and musical interpretations. Jia Jia plays the modern Konghou\, a double-strung harp with features that allow for unique techniques and ornamentation. Each artist will perform select solo pieces\, and together\, will present a unique arrangement of the famous Chinese folk song “Moon Reflection on the Erquan Springs”\, demonstrating the harmony of the two instruments. \n\nThe Artists\n\n\n\nBrooke Leifso (co-composer/performer) is a disabled/crip artist\, academic\, access consultant\, and expressive art practitioner (EGS\, MA\,EXA-CT). Most recently as a professional artist\, Brooke had recent fellowships at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart\, Germany) and Art Quarter Budapest (Budapest\, Hungary) producing the performance series\, BODYwork describing an embodied lived experience through metaphor\, audio description and captioning. Access intimacy is part of the BODYwork series. Brooke is performing with Gary James Joynes. Photo credit Barni Kiss (courtesy of Art Quarter Budapest). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary James Joynes\, also known as Clinker\, is an award-winning visual and sound artist based in Edmonton\, Canada. He blends the beauty and physicality of sound’s auditory and visual elements in rigorous and emotional installation works\, and in Live Cinema AV performances. Joynes’ innovative and thought-provoking works have earned international recognition\, with exhibitions and performances held at renowned art galleries and festivals worldwide. His artistic practice invites audiences to experience the profound beauty of the unseen and to encourage a slowed and attentive state in viewers-to have them interrupt busy-ness for prolonged moments of being-ness. Photo credit Ian Hunter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimone A. Medina Polo is a philosopher and interdisciplinary artist based out of amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton\, Alberta\, Canada). As a musician\, Simone has released multiple music albums as pseudo-antigone including her album Melancholic Melodrama which tells a quasi-fiction of the subjective destitution of an insecure artist who severed her own humanity in a Faustian bargain to become TMZ-level pop star disaster. Academically\, Simone has published articles and book chapters in philosophy\, psychoanalysis\, and Marxism with collaborators and editors such as Nicol A. Barria-Asenjo\, Slavoj Žižek\, Julie Reshe\, Vanessa Sinclair\, Todd McGowan\, and Duane Rousselle. Photo credit Simone A. Medina Polo and Pip Co \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGolden Sun Trio is an improvised music group formed by Nadir Bellahmer\, Ethan Bokma & Mustafa Rafiq based in amiskawaciy-waskahikan (Treaty 6\, edmonton\, ab) Live performances have drawn comparisons to the Necks & Jamie Branch . Dense & airy\, punctual and fluid. This devotional sound is wrung from the transitive nature of improvisation. The group continues to work and propel further. Recording sessions are one-take afternoons spent at Bellahmers home studio\, gathered around tea. often no words will be said before music is flowing. The new record is prairie blues\, folktale and new-age meditations ‘Lifecycle\, Ritual\, Myth’ Out Fall 2025 on Honey Farm Records. Photo credit @momerfish. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith 20 years of experience in performing and teaching Erhu\, Nanyen Lau is dedicated to bringing Chinese culture and music to a wider audience through teaching and playing for community events in the city. She is a longtime member and current concertmaster of the Edmonton Chinese Philharmonica Orchestra and one of the forces behind Edmonton’s emerging Echo Ensemble\, and on the side enjoys playing covers of video game\, anime and movie soundtracks on YouTube. Photo credit Nanyen Lau. \nJia Jia Yong is a harpist and composer based in Edmonton. She performs as a freelance musician at various events in Edmonton and area and also enjoys developing collaborative projects with other musicians and artists. In 2022\, Jia Jia received a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council to learn the modern konghou\, a Chinese harp\, becoming one of only a handful of players in North America \n\n\n\nAccessibility\nMile Zero Dance Space (9931 – 78 Avenue NW\, Edmonton): accessible building with multiple all-gender washrooms. There is a cleared path from the front door to the warehouse space. We have two accessible washroom facilities on the main floor as well. Please note that we do not yet have an automatic front door and the sidewalk outside needs to be improved as well. The #523 bus stops at 99 St and 78 Ave\, approx 120 meters from the venue (stop #1542 SB\, stop #22729 NB)\, and the #8 bus stops at Whyte Ave and 99 St\, approx 500 meters from the venue (stop #1035 EB\, #2824 WB)

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Raiskin\, conductor\nAlexei Volodin\, piano  \nSamy Moussa: Elysium\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1\nJohannes Brahms: Symphony No. 4 \nPhoto: Marco Borggreve. \nOur season begins in spectacular fashion. Blending melody and emotion with technical wizardry\, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is the most popular piano concerto of all time. No one wears their heart on the sleeve like Tchaikovsky; each bar is on fire with emotional chaos\, honesty\, turmoil\, and jubilation. \nAt the keyboard is returning guest artist Alexei Volodin. This time round\, Volodin tackles the first Tchaikovsky concerto in our season opener before presenting the less famous second at our first Sunday matinée. \nAlso on the program is the final formal symphonic composition by Johannes Brahms — a composer who struggled with the pressures of writing a first symphony. This last work presents an assured composer writing with clear\, powerful emotion that is compelling and complex. \nThe evening begins with a work inspired by the everlasting paradise of the ancient Greeks. Penned by Canadian Samy Mousa\, Elysium is a monumental work that has become his musical calling card.

An orchestral journey towards the light\, the work stands as a testament to Shostakovich’s defiance in the face of political oppression. \n*Denotes Canadian composer.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 9\, 2025 at 3:00pm\nBella Concert Hall\, Mount Royal University \nwith\nLuminous Strings\nLaura Brandt\, soprano\nAdam Brousseau\, baritone \n\nFigure Humaine by Francis Poulenc headlines this program built on themes of war\, peace and freedom. Famously one of the most virtuosic and demanding works for unaccompanied choir\, Figure Humaine was composed during the German occupation of France in WWII. With text by poet Paul Éluard\, the final movement served as a rallying cry for the French resistance\, as the poem was air-dropped by the Royal Air Force in 1943. Only six years earlier\, Ralph Vaughan Williams composed his Dona nobis pacem as a plea for peace in a world growing increasingly fearful of another war. The orchestration features strings\, piano and percussion\, along with  the choir and local stars\, Laura Brandt and Adam Brousseau. The program will also feature a new work by Quebec-based composer-conductor Robert Ingari.

All ages welcome! \n“I knew in my soul that I needed to play music every day for the rest of my life. Music brought me so much joy that I didn’t want to think about how hard life could be at the time for a woman trying to make a name for herself in the musical industry.” – Léa Plourde-Archer\, Violet’s Path: the melodious life of Violet Balestreri Archer \nViolet Archer (1913-2000) earned high honours as a classical music composer beginning in the 1930s. This was a rare career choice\, especially for women at the time\, so Violet faced many obstacles. Through passion and perseverance\, she earned much respect from her peers and built up a catalogue comprising over 300 compositions. \nThis year marks the 25th anniversary of Violet’s death\, and her work and life story are as relevant as ever. Inspired by her great-aunt’s legacy\, drive\, and enthusiasm\, writer Léa Plourde-Archer presents a picture book manuscript that will bring Violet’s story to new eyes and ears. Meant to be enjoyed by children and adults alike\, this story is one of a great Canadian artist who didn’t set out to be a trailblazer\, but became a role model to many simply by following her instincts. \nThe author will read the full manuscript\, which will be accompanied by drawings and photographs illustrating Violet Archer’s life. The reading will also be punctuated with short musical interludes played by live musicians. \n \nAbout Léa Plourde-Archer: \nLéa Plourde-Archer is an experienced content writer and emerging literary voice. Recently\, her creative focus has turned toward the life and legacy of her great aunt\, celebrated Canadian composer Violet Archer. Fueled by a deep curiosity and a vibrant imagination\, Léa is currently developing two manuscripts about Violet’s life: one crafted for young readers and the other intended for adults. She hopes to bring this remarkable musical figure to new audiences through storytelling and research. \n \nThe Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region presents Composer’s Reading Session\, featuring the Kensington Sinfonia. This interactive session brings selected works by local contemporary composers to life\, giving each piece a live reading and immediate response from the musicians. Composers can hear their music performed\, experiment with ideas\, and work directly with the ensemble to explore nuances of orchestration and interpretation. As a rare live workshop experience\, this session provides invaluable feedback from professional musicians. \nAbout Kensington Sinfonia: \nThe Kensington Sinfonia has been sharing intimate\, inspiring chamber music with Calgary since 1988. From timeless Baroque favorites to bold new works\, the ensemble creates programs that celebrate both tradition and innovation. With a strong focus on local composers and collaborations\, the Sinfonia brings fresh energy to every performance. Now in its fourth decade\, Kensington Sinfonia continues to make classical music welcoming\, creative\, and community-driven — inviting audiences of all ages to connect with the joy of live performance in new and meaningful ways. \n\nThis festival is presented in partnership with the National Music Centre and the Alberta Registered Music Teachers Association (ARMTA)

Archer’s musical palette is deeply evocative\, and this program brings to life her extraordinary concepts of tonality\, phrasing\, counterpoint\, structure\, and texture that shaped and solidified her mastery. \nIn Violet Light invites listeners to trace the pathways of Archer’s creative journey and her lifelong advocacy for new music. Featuring renowned Canadian artists Camryn Dewar (soprano) and Sandra Joy Friesen (piano)\, experience how her works continue to resonate through solo piano pieces elegantly complemented with songs for mezzo soprano. \n \nAbout Camryn Dewar \nFulbright scholar and multi-instrumentalist Camryn Dewar is a champion of vocal versatility and accomplished Métis musician\, known for her dynamic range across musical genres including contemporary classical\, opera\, musical theatre\, and jazz. Hailed as an “incredible performer and instrument” (Jeffrey Gall)\, Camryn is passionate about presenting works of living and Indigenous composers\, and is committed to using her artistry as a catalyst to uplift and amplify Indigenous voices. As she welcome opportunities that fulfill the creative process\, Sandra Joy played a broad range of repertoire from traditional to contemporary\, to interpretation of pictorial scores and interdisciplinary collaboration. \nIn 2009\, Sandra Joy’s studies in improvisation and free-interpretation with pianist Douglas Finch (London\, England) became a turning point in her musical artistry and this practice continues to feed her inspiration and motivation as a musical artist. Sandra Joy havs promoted the music of Canadian composers since the early 90s and was invited by the Association for Canadian Studies in Mexico and in Brazil to represent the University of Alberta and Canadian composers in solo piano recitals. \nGenerous awards from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Edmonton Arts Council allowed Sandra Joy to complete the recording Sound Reflections\, Volume 1: Off the Shelf; a project of audio plus video recordings that provide interpretive context and address various challenges in contemporary music. Among her musical passions\, the elegantly refined and picturesque style of the French masters features regularly in her solo piano programs. Sandra Joy has always felt a special sensitivity for art song and choir collaborations\, performing this vast repertoire throughout her career and\, currently\, she enjoys being the pianist for the Cantaré Children’s Choir. \nThis festival is presented in partnership with the National Music Centre and the Alberta Registered Music Teachers Association (ARMTA)

SUMMARY:New Music Edmonton presents Through Closed Doors – Ukrainian New Music
DESCRIPTION:New Music Edmonton presents Through Closed Doors – Ukrainian New Music – a portrait of some of the incredible new work being created by composers of the Ukrainian descent diaspora. Zoltan Almashi is still in Ukraine. In one way or another\, their works reflect on\, or are influenced by\, the current and past history of Ukraine\, and of Ukrainian culture. They suggest that art and creativity are a central\, crucial voice in ensuring an ongoing\, robust identity. Led by violinist Viktoria Grynenko\, this all-star ensemble of some of our city’s finest string players will interpret these amazing works for various strings configurations\, including electronics. Based around reactions to invasion and war\, reflections on the Revolution of Dignity\, this will be a profoundly moving\, absorbing look at what it can mean to create art with intense resolve and belief. \nViktoria Grynenko and Vladimir Rufino (violin)\, Fabiola Amorim (viola)\, Amy Nicholson (cello)\, Guillaume Tardif (violin). Compositions by Anna Pidgorna\, Boris Loginov\, Zoltan Almashi. \nContent warning – sleep during insomnia has sounds of air raids and explosions. \nThrough Closed Doors is a clandestine dialogue between two people trapped on opposite sides of a closed door. The definitive version of the score is inscribed on a restored antique door\, which was once hacked with a hatchet\, leaving a jagged hole. This disturbingly fascinating wound inspired the dramatic conception of this piece and some of its musical gestures. The phrasing draws loosely on speech and song patterns\, while the work’s structure grows around the door\, guided by its various panels and defects. The graphic notation\, designed specifically for this piece\, eliminates accents\, dynamics\, and bow pressure markings by incorporating them directly into the staff lines. The wavering staves resemble natural wood patterns and invite the performers to approach the score intuitively. The layout of the musical lines on the door guides the physical manifestation of the drama being played out in the music. This work was commissioned by Thin Edge New Music Collective and premiered by Ilana Waniuk and Suhashini Arulanandam in 2014\, in Toronto\, Canada. \nDuo for Two Violins\, No. 1 – Composed in 2007 and revisited in 2022\, this work was commissioned by Anna Savytska and Jakub Dzialak\, a violin duo known for their performances of experimental music. Almashi knew the musicians\, however\, as virtuoso violinists with great richness of sound\, which inspired him to write Duo for Two Violins\, No. 1. He aspired to create a piece that allowed the duo to exploit the violin’s conventional range of sound: “I was sure that deep inside\, they [Anna Savytska and Jakub Dzialak] wish for a contemporary piece where one can simply play with a beautiful sound\, play sincerely and expressively”. \nsleep during insomnia – The impulse to create sleep during insomnia originated in the composer’s need to “do something” at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. This piece for string quartet and electronics is inspired by various forms of sleep and insomnia. \nAccording to Loginov\, at the start of the all-out war\, everyone was “… sleeping and awake at the same time\, we [Ukrainians] could sleep very little\, or not sleep at all\, or sleep but wake up several times\, night or day\, constantly waiting for bad news\, or even worse news”. His creative process began by experimenting with sounds recorded prior to the Russian invasion\, such as his wife’s breathing\, the rumblings of an old garage door\, and stones clashing or falling. The piece unfolds around the funeral song referred to as “eternal sleep” from Sergei Ta \nThrough Closed Doors (2014) – Anna Pidgorna \nDuo for Two Violins No. 1 (2007-2022) – Zoltan Almashi \nsleep during insomnia (2022) – Boris Loginov \nGreen Sonata – Zoltan Almashi
